I’m still figuring out my blog scheduling but I want to start a new weekly feature where I showcase five picture books.
They are not necessarily brand new and they might all follow a theme. Or they might be whatever I’ve pulled off my children’s shelves that day! I am pretty intentional about picking good quality books for my kids and this will help me keep it up. It can get get pretty exhausting trying to keep up with all the latest books out there and I’d love for this to be a great resource for parents looking for some great books.
This is Sadie by Sara O’Leary and illustrated by Julie Morstad - I have to admit I ordered this one from the library based on its cover alone and some of the pictures I saw of its illustrations online. Each page is beautiful but even more enjoyable is the story. Sadie is a child comfortable with creating stories and we learn that she’s imagined herself as a boy raised by wolves or had tea in Wonderland. This book is one I’m looking forward to giving to many kids for their birthday this year!
The Emperor of Absurdia by Chris Riddell - We have loved this book for a while and just recently I found it at a thrift store and snapped it up. It’s a bit young for my 5 year old but he still asked to read it three times in a row. The little boy in the story falls asleep and dreams of a land where he is the emperor of a world turned upside down. Birds are trees and trees are umbrellas. The book is whimsical and fun and full of unexpected surprises. Another book that celebrates creativity and imagination.
Sleep like a Tiger by Mary Logue and illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski - I didn’t realize until writing this post that Pamela Zagarenski illustrated both Sleep like a Tiger and The Whisper. This book won the Caldecott Honor Award which is no surprise. In this story, a little girl is resisting her bedtime but her parents gently coax her to sleep by considering all the animals who also need to sleep. Zagarenski’s illustrations are detailed and perfectly match the beautiful writing.
